US Kraft Linerboard Exports Shrank To Lowest Since 2013
2022-02-22 14:50chinapaperonline.com
The United States shipped only 3.49 million metric tons of kraft linerboard to the outside world in 2021, down -16.4% year-on-year and to the lowest since 2013! Data from AF&PA showed that exports to China reduced the most by -49% from the previous year to 369,000 metric tons! At the same time, exports to Europe, Asia (excluding China) and Latin America fell between -10.9% and -34.5% . Mexico and Canada were the only two countries that enjoyed positive growth in the year. Shipment to Mexico in particular gained +16.8% to 872,000 metric tons, keeping the country the top destination market of US kraft linerboard exports.

Regardless of the improvement of US domestic mill and box plant inventories by 410,000 metric tons, which totaled 2.49 million metric tons at end-December 2021, market still feels the tightness in supply from delayed transportation and a general need by converters to build more inventories. Market observers believed that US kraft linerboard exports would hardly improve in 2022 in view of high costs of raw materials, logistics and labor on the one hand and the steady increase in demand of containerboard on the other.
