Industry Moves On Under Earning Declines
2020-05-26 11:27chinapaperonline.com
On May 14th, China Paper Association (CPA) published its report on industry performance in 2019. Without surprise to market analysts, the annual report shows a -21.06% decline in industry earnings from the previous year to RMB35.9 billion, regardless of a moderate growth by +3.16% in paper and board production during the year. This was a consecutive decrease in earnings from 2018 when industry earnings fell for the first time in decades. From its historical peak in 2017 after surging +55.63% from 2016, industry earnings tumbled -15.05% to RMB44.6 billion in 2018. Among the 2,524 pulp and paper companies surveyed by CPA, 560 - or 22.19% - were in negative performance, the 2019 annual report confirms. Most industry analysts now fear that industry earnings will suffer considerably further in 2020, hard hit by the outbreak of COVID-19 and the aftermath from the pandemic inside and outside China.

Still, paper and board consumption was on the growth. In 2019, China’s paper and board consumption was able to rise +2.54% from the previous year to keep a narrow difference from production growth, thanks to the increase in the country’s population to 1.4 billion (vs. 1.39 billion in 2018) who maintained a per capita consumption of 75kg. in the year, largely packaging paper, paperboard and tissue paper.
