GACC Directs Largest-Scale Crackdown on Inward Smuggling of Illegally-Imported Wastes

On May 22, Minister Ni Yuefeng presented at Anti-Smuggling Command Center of General Administration of China Customs (GACC), directed the third “Action Blue Sky 2018” to crack down on the smuggling of illegally imported wastes, making such crackdown operation on the largest scale in recent years.
At 06:00 a.m. that day, under the command of the GACC, Guangdong Sub-Administration and 25 Customs Districts (including Tianjin, Dalian, Shenyang, Harbin, Shanghai, Nanjing, Ningbo, Fuzhou, Nanchang, Changsha, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Gongbei, Shantou, Huangpu, Kunming and Urumqi), by dispatching a total of 1,291 officers in 212 action groups, conducted the crackdown synchronously in 17 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities including Beijing. In the synchronous way, the anti-smuggling officers arrested the involved suspects, searched the involved companies or places, and seized the warehouses or dens storing or processing smuggled-in solid wastes, consequently wiping out 39 smuggling groups at one blow. Till 09:00 a.m., they have seized 137,000 tons of smuggled wastes such as waste slag and scrap metals; verified the smuggling of waste plastics, waste slag and scrap metals totaling 606,500 tons; captured 137 criminal suspects as well as large quantities of smuggling evidences; detained and frozen large sums of illegal fund.
